I Belong Downtown Submission Guidelines

There are two ways to share an I Belong Downtown stories. 

  1. Social Media Take a photo or video and post and tag your #iBelongDowntown story on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. As soon as you use the hashtag, you’re story will be entered in the I Belong Downtown project.

  2. Through the Website Submit your story on the I Belong Downtown website. Use the form to submit your written story and attach your photos or videos. 

You may enter as many submissions as you’d like however any abuse of the website or hashtag will result in all photos submitted being disqualified.

I Belong Downtown runs from August to end of November 2017.  All submissions must be entered during that time.


By submitting a photo, you grant I Belong Downtown Project permission to a royalty-free, nonexclusive right during to display the photograph on I Belong Downtown website, on the following social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and other project related materials, with appropriate credit.

Winning Entries

10 finalists and one winning entry will be selected.

The winning submission will receive a cash prize of $500. The 10 finalists will have their story displayed on CUI’s website, on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and at events hosted in the 5 partner cities with the appropriate credit.

Submissions will be evaluated by CUI staff and volunteers based on originality, creativity, composition, overall impact, subject matter relevance, and illumination of something interesting or unique about your downtown experience.

Only entries submitted before November 30, 2017 will be eligible.

If your entry is selected, you will be contacted via the medium by which you entered and may be asked to provide the original photo or video file, and additional information.

If the requested file and information are not received within this time frame, I Belong Downtown Project reserves the right to select an alternate winner.

The Fine Print

You may include previously taken photos as well as photos from other sources, as you still maintain the right to grant us a license. You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to the I Belong Downtown Project upon request.

If your entries include one or more identifiable person(s), you are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions from the individuals depicted in case your photo is selected, and must be able to provide copies of releases to the I Belong Downtown Project if requested.  

The following submissions are ineligible:

  • Entries that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization.
  • Entries that violate or infringe upon another person's rights, including but not limited to copyright.
  • Entries that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content.
  • Entries that involve harming, damaging, or putting in danger any person, animal, plant life, object, or structure.


Although we encourage all story submissions to be creative. YouTube will remove the sound of videos without credit and that use unlicensed music. We encourage participants to be innovative and authentic with their submissions. *This includes all multimedia (images, sound, and video) items taken from a specific website or source,
